Chicago Index Crime Rates (Chicago Police Department, 2004)

Although the city of Chicago reports higher than average crime rates, the Chicago Police Department has undertaken many initiatives to decrease crime within the city. Through the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS), the Chicago Police Department has worked closely with residents to develop grass-roots solutions to neighborhood crimes. CAPS brings together the police, the community, and other city agencies as necessary to identify and solve neighborhood problems, rather than simply react after the crime. Since community policing was fully implemented in 1995, index crime in Chicago has dropped 26%.

The city of Chicago provides residents with access to a database of reported crimes, to assist residents in problem-solving and combating crime and disorder in their neighborhoods. Using websites such as Chicago Crime and Citizen I Cam, residents of Chicago are able to search for reported crime at addresses, schools, road intersections and within police districts. Lincoln Park Chicago is part of a number of police districts, including the 18th District (Police Beats 1811-1814, 1821-1822, 1824), the 19th District (Police Beat 1933) and the 23rd District (Police Beat 2333). These websites enable Chicago residents to research their neighborhood and their daily route to work or school to find the safest way to travel.

Chicago is also one of the first US cities to build an integrated emergency response center to coordinate the city's response to terrorist attacks, gang violence, and natural disasters. Built in 1995, the center is integrated with a direct link to the National Counter terrorism Center, and communications with all levels of city government. Recently installed anti-crime cameras have been introduced and are capable of pinpointing gunshot sounds, calculating where the shots were fired, and pointing and zooming the cameras in the direction of the shots within a two block radius. Early results show these new cameras to be highly effective in reducing crime, and exemplifies an additional step the city of Chicago has taken to ensure the safety of its residents.
